VP Lending Analytics

This is a Full-time position in Vienna, VA posted February 4, 2021.

Basic Purpose

To provide the Lending Department with optimal, data-driven, actionable, proactive analytic capabilities to accomplish the strategic objectives of the organization. Deliver business intelligence that enables senior management to understand member behavior and identify opportunities to advance business goals and optimize tradeoffs between risk management and other business objectives Provide thought leadership to the organization on advanced analytics and partner cross-functionally with internal clients to deliver optimal value through innovative analytic solutions. Oversee data science team and direct the development of strong modeling and superior analytic capabilities responsible for converting data into high-impact analytical results to help business partners monitor and improve performance, optimize risk strategies and credit guidelines relative to established risk tolerance, and balance competing business objectives such as growth, profitability, market share and competitive position. Ensure that mathematical and statistical models are sound and satisfy governance requirements from regulatory agencies, Internal Audit and Model Risk Management groups.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee strategy, establish priorities and set goals; evaluate and implement standards to ensure alignment with departmental/organizational objectives
  • Provide thought leadership on advanced analytic capabilities and collaborate with enterprise analytic teams to ensure the organization is equipped with the core tools, capabilities and information systems required to support a winning strategy
  • Guide modeling efforts associated with estimation for the Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses (ALLL) to ensure that models maintain adequate reserves for future losses and meet methodological and documentation standards set by auditors and examiners
  • Develop, implement and maintain quantitative models forecasting risk, portfolio performance, member behavior and related business metrics
  • Identify opportunities to develop and strengthen processes to enhance efficiency and controls 
  • Manage and lead the efforts to identify and develop innovative, creative and strategic initiatives for systems/process improvements to sustain and improve operations
  • Provide oversight of strategic business development/change projects in the division to ensure the internal control environment is being built in line with risk tolerance and group standards
  • Lead and coordinate the planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resourcing of projects to scope, identify risk exposure and remediation of non-compliance to standards
  • Serve as liaison and manages communications with internal and external auditors with regards to processes, procedures, key controls and system controls
  • Oversee the development and productions of reports, projections, and solutions to establish and strengthen system controls, facilitate process management and data reconciliation, optimize methodologies, improve services and products, and estimate return on investments, revenue, and potential growth models
  • Involved in driving continuous process improvement to increase member experience quality; reduce losses; minimize financial risk and maintain high operational efficiency
  • Manage partnerships and collaboration with key business partners to identify critical needs, devise solutions, and facilitate the attainment of business objectives
  • Provide strategic analysis, recommendations and help influence key decisions by senior department leadership regarding technology and financial market trends, and competitive analysis regarding identification of the department’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats
  • Represent the department, acting on behalf of department leadership, as liaison and spokesperson to Navy Federal committees, other Departments and senior management regarding all areas of matters
  • Stay informed of business environment, financial services and associated trends to ensure competitive business conditions and newest developments are incorporated
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations and legislation
  • Ensure effective management of projects from inception through implementation
  • Develop analytic solutions to assess and manage risks associated with Lending business objectives and ensure activities are in alignment with risk tolerance
  • Serve as a subject matter expert with internal and external auditors (e.g., NCUA, CFPB, and contracted third parties) to address and resolve audit questions and findings
  • Serve as strategic advisor to senior management
  • Provide overall leadership to large strategic projects or programs

Perform supervisory/managerial responsibilities

  • Ensure adequate/skilled staffing; select employees
  • Establish performance goals and priorities
  • Prepare, conduct and review performance appraisals
  • Develop, mentor and counsel staff
  • Provide input and/or prepare budget requirements for Annual Financial Plan (AFP)
  • Ensure section/branch goals and objectives align with division/department strategy
  • Ensure efficiency of operations
  • Leadership Level – Lead/direct managers & staff
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a Mathematics, Operations Research, Finance, Business Administration or related field, or the equivalent combination of training, education and experience
  • Advanced knowledge of methodologies used to measure, model and simulate credit risk, operational risk, regulatory risk and risk exposure in all relevant lending product types
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanics and mathematical calculations that underlie various financial instruments and the implications to business risk and financial performance
  • Expert knowledge of forecasting methodologies and best practices for predicting business trends and providing forecasts that drive business planning and decisions
  • Advanced knowledge of banking/financial industry trends, products and services
  • Advanced knowledge of any of the following: asset/liability management, financial accounting, cost accounting, budgeting principles and practices, statistics, finance, and/or mathematic modeling 
  • Advanced research, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Advanced knowledge of advanced analytic techniques used in the financial services industry, specifically in the area of Credit Risk Analytics, Business Intelligence, Data Visualization, Process Simulation and modeling, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of financial/risk instruments and their impact on the balance sheet
  • Significant experience supervising and leading professional employees
  • Extensive experience managing cross-functional, multi-dimensional teams and projects of the highest complexity which have business risk and impact
  • Expert analytical/quantitative, reconciliation and deductive reasoning skills
  • Extensive experience in statistical/risk modeling and forecasting preferably in a financial environment
  • Significant experience in assimilating technical, complex financial and economic data
  • Advanced skill using modeling, forecasting, and data mining systems and applications
  • Advanced skill presenting findings, conclusions, alternatives and information clearly and concisely
  • Experience supervising and leading professional employees
  • dvanced skill in producing desired results and achieving goals and objectives
  • Advanced skill interacting with staff, management, vendors, members diplomatically and tactfully
